Hairy Coo Mountain Bike Challenge 2010

The 4th Annual Hairy Coo was another excellent event, with some top class racing, leg sapping climbs, technical and adrenaline fuelled decsending, and plenty of thrills and spills throughout the day

Despite the threatening clouds, the rain stayed off for most of the day and it was with excellent under wheel conditions that the first race of the day, the Wee Race set off at 11am. There were some excellent performances, particularly from our winner, the apparently rocket powered Findlay Kinloch, who managed to complete an impressive 6 laps of the wee course in the alloted hour.

Next up was the Bairns race, which attracted a very large field. The level of riding ability and determination from the young riders was phenomenal, and the future of the sport is looking very rosy if these guys and girls are anything to go by. The results for this race will follow, as will the wee race results.

A record number of participants started the main event of the day, the Big Race. The pace was frenetic as the leading riders jockeyed for position up the initial climb, and it was a wee while before the field began to string itself out. The course was as challenging as ever, with some excellent uphill and downhill tussles and a great deal of fun was had by all. The overall winner was Iain Nimmo, once again, and he completed the 5 laps of the course in a mind boggling 1hr 42 mins. In a not too distant second came Michael Boyd, followed by Ben Cathro. The ladies event was also fiercly contested, with Miranda Balfour pipping Elena Melton into second spot, and Suzanne Harrison coming a creditable third.

The other results are listed at the foot of the page. A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped out on the day, our wonderful timekeepers and the team who did the registration, all the marshalls, including a special mention to Helen Findlay who took over as head marshal, and provided the radios, The red cross folk who were on hand all day and also the tuck shop folk from Crieff and of course to Digby Sym for co-ordinating everything and putting countless hours in to ensure everything went off without a hitch. Which it did.

Special thanks go to Perth City Cycles and the Fun Junction for supporting the Hairy Coo. And the biggest thank you is to everyone who took part, for helping to make the event such a success. Hope to see you here again next year for Hairy Coo 2011, which will held on Saturday 8 October.  Full results from the big race can be seen here
